Vintage Repair and Rebuilds
Repair services are available for vintage microphones of most makes and models. These repairs include mechanical and electrical problems. Often physical repairs and electronic repairs can be made for a fraction of the cost of replacements from the factory. Not sure if your mic can be repaired, email me: info@sidegatestudio
Rebuild a vintage mic? Why?
Capacitors, resistors and other components all change with age and they can change to a place where your beloved microphone stops sounding its best. Your microphone can be brought back to life by being repaired or rebuilt with new components.
The more stock components that can be left in place, the more like stock your microphone will sound, so each component is tested to be sure that it is within stock parameters. Any components that are malfunctioning or that have wandered away from their intended tolerance will be replaced with high grade components of similar build or better. If capsules are deemed to need repair, they will be sent elsewhere for servicing.
Where possible, I replace parts with stock or stock equilvalent. Often the original components are no longer available (such as vintage ceramic capacitors), in which case I use the optimum modern replacement part; I select replacement components for longevity and the most natural, pleasing sound. Therefore, if your microphone is part of a pair, it is highly recommended to rebuild both at the same time.
Because of the specific nature of this service, pricing is on a per case basis. Send an email to info@sidegatestudio to inquire.
Check out the samples page for a pair of rebuilt AKG451e. In these mics virtually every resistor, capacitor and FET was replaced.
